Qibla finder: see the direction and how much to trust the compass
Finding the qibla with a phone is easy; knowing whether the compass is right at this moment is the hard part. Mihruna shows the direction and states its accuracy plainly.
How is the qibla direction calculated?
The qibla angle is computed along the shortest arc (great circle) between your position and the Kaaba, and the phone’s compass sensor shows that angle relative to where you are facing. The calculation happens entirely on the phone.
Why phone compasses go wrong
- Metal desks, radiators, cars, lifts and reinforced concrete disturb the magnetic field.
- Magnetic phone cases and car mounts deflect the compass.
- A sensor that has not been used for a while needs calibration; move the phone in a figure of eight.
- Location uncertainty grows indoors; over short distances this barely affects the direction, but it is shown anyway.
What Mihruna does differently: it won’t say “aligned” unless it is
Location quality and sensor uncertainty are visible on screen. When the signal is weak or there is magnetic interference, the app warns you instead of showing a green “aligned”. The qibla screen is one tap away, on the compass tab in the bottom bar.
Your location stays on the device
The location used for the qibla is held in memory only for that moment; it is not sent to a server or stored. The compass runs only while the screen is open.
For an accurate qibla
- Keep the phone away from metal surfaces and magnetic cases, and hold it flat.
- Open the Qibla tab in the bottom bar and allow location access.
- If there is an accuracy warning, calibrate with a figure of eight, then turn once the arrow settles.
Common questions
- Can I find the qibla without internet?
- Yes. The calculation happens on the phone; as long as GPS can fix your position, no connection is needed.
- Why does the direction differ between apps?
- The maths is the same; the difference almost always comes from magnetic interference on the compass sensor at that moment. That is why the accuracy indicator matters.
- Is my location stored anywhere?
- No. The location on the qibla screen is neither sent to a server nor stored on the device.
