Word-by-word Quran: each word lights up as it is recited

Following the text with your eyes while listening is one of the most effective methods for learners and for those memorising. Mihruna highlights the word the reciter is on.

How it works

For each verse Mihruna uses word timings that belong to the reciter’s recording (Quran Foundation / quran.com data). As the audio advances, the word being recited is highlighted. If the reciter goes back and repeats a word, the highlight goes back too; it is a timeline, not a counter that only moves forward.

No guessing on unverified verses

All 6,236 verses of the Quran were checked one by one against the timing data. For the Alafasy recitation, word counts and timings match in about 99 percent of verses. For the few that do not, Mihruna does not guess: highlighting stays off and the verse is read and played normally. We would rather highlight nothing than highlight the wrong word.

Which reciters are supported?

Word-by-word following works with the Alafasy, Sudais and Husary recitations. Because timings belong to a specific recording, highlighting is only active while that exact audio source is playing.

How to use it

Turning on word following

Open a surah from the Quran tab and press play.
The recited word is highlighted automatically, and the screen follows as verses change.
To turn it off, disable “word-by-word following” in the reader settings.
